Announcing the winners of the 2024 CIFOR-ICRAF photo competition: Biodiversity, Climate, Restoration

We are thrilled to announce the winners of this year’s Biodiversity, Climate and Restoration photo competition! Thank you to everyone who participated and shared their visual stories of how forests and trees shape our world.

With thousands of entries and almost 10,000 votes cast globally, this competition showcased the beauty and importance of biodiversity, the critical role of forests and trees in combating climate change, and the inspiring efforts toward restoration across the globe.

Thank you to each participant, voter, and our esteemed panel of judges, who dedicated their time and expertise to this celebration of nature through photography.

Our jury

Marlon del Aguila Guerrero

Marlon del Aguila Guerrero, a Peruvian wildlife and conservation photographer, is based in Tarapoto, a city in the heart of the Amazonian jungle. Growing up surrounded by the lush greenery and diverse wildlife of the Amazon, Guerrero developed a deep appreciation for its beauty and the urgency to preserve it. His early explorations in the rainforest sparked a passion that would shape his life’s work, ultimately driving him to capture the essence of this unique ecosystem through his lens.

Georgina Smith

Georgina Smith is a journalist, photographer and communications professional with 20 years of experience in working in Africa and Asia. Her interest in documenting our relationship with the environment and nature originated in early experiences in the remote bush of northern Zambia where she grew up. Since then, she has covered the environment and topics related to food security, climate change and conflict for news outlets including the BBC, Guardian Newspaper, Al Jazeera and PBS NewsHour; and supported organizations including UNEP, UNDP, the World Bank and CGIAR organizations with strategic communication advice and advocacy reporting.

Anthony Ochieng

Anthony is a National Geographic Explorer, iLCP Emerging Fellow, and NEWF Fellow. His work is focused on creating content that will inspire conservation action across all ages and races. In addition to serving as a Board Member of the Conservation Alliance of Kenya (CAK), he is the Executive Director and Founder of TonyWild Foundation, a platform for promoting conservation action by creating awareness of wildlife conservation through photography, film, and science.
